How to Help the Pets Affected By the Israel-Hamas War
A list of on-the-ground orgs to help as conflict escalates.
Israel declared war on Sunday following an attack from Hamasopens in a new tab — the Palestinian political and militant organization that currently governs the Gaza Strip. Over the weekend, a video surfaced of a dog being shot and killed in the yard of a house reportedly located in Kibbutz Kissufim, located adjacent to the Gaza Strip. This has raised alarm about the safety of animals and pets in the area, regardless of people’s views on the conflict.
Here are three organizations on the ground that help animals in the area. As this conflict continues, we will continue to keep an eye on how these and other orgs are helping — and how you can help them from afar.
Sulula Animal Rescue
According to their website, Sulula Animal Rescueopens in a new tab is the first and only animal rescue on the Gaza Strip, founded in 2006. The organizationopens in a new tab focuses on rescuing animals in the area and providing them with food and medical help. Animal and Environment Association Bethlehem Shelter
Animal and Environment Association (AEA) Bethlehem Shelter 2016, this org’s site opens in a new tabsays it’s the only animal shelter in the West Bank. AEA provides medical treatment to dogs, cats, and other injured animals, as well as spay and neuter services. They also state that they are “working to change policies that allow the abuse and the poisoning of dogs without penalty and for vets that witness these atrocities to be held accountable.”
SPCA Israel
Per its websiteopens in a new tab, the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in Israel was established in 1927 and provides services including “sheltering abandoned animals and finding them adoptive homesopens in a new tab, a veterinary clinicopens in a new tab, and boardingopens in a new tab kennels for pets.” In addition to other services, including spay and neuter, the SPCA provides education on adopting and also works at the Parliamentary level to protect animal welfare.
